 |  BY ProjectPro

“I already have a job, so I don’t need to learn a new programming language.”

If you are thinking this, then it is a very foolish stance to take where your career is concerned. According to the most recent Open Source Jobs Report from Dice, 74% of the hiring managers are looking to hire open source developers making them the most sought after IT professionals. Having highlighted the demand for open source developers, one cannot ignore what’s trending in the open source technology domain. As open source technologies gain popularity at a rapid pace, professionals who can upgrade their skillset by learning fresh technologies like Hadoop, Spark, NoSQL, etc. will be most sought after in the IT industry than those who work on legacy code.

A quick search for the term “learn hadoop”  showed up 856,000 results on Google with thousands of blogs, tutorials, big data application demos, online MOOC offering hadoop training and best hadoop books for anyone willing to learn hadoop. From this, it is evident that the global hadoop job market is on an exponential rise with many professionals eager to tap their learning skills on Hadoop technology.

Big Data and Hadoop Job Market in Singapore

According to IDA, there were 2000+ data analysts working in Singapore in 2014 and it is anticipated to grow by a third in the next 3 years.

A research report by Harvard Business Review, identifies big data analytics as a major growth sector in Singapore, anticipated to add S$1billion value to the Singapore economy.

As the global shortage of analytics talent prevails, Singapore is coming up with novel strategies to develop the analytics talent pool. National University of Singapore (NUS) has announced a new data science and analytics program to be offered starting August 2016 as a part of its Smart Nation research cluster. However, it will begin with an intake of only 50 students.

With a plan to nurture 2500+ multidisciplinary big data analytics professionals in the next 5 years- this is the best time for Singaporeans to develop their big data and data science skillset. Learning big data technologies will help Singaporeans fulfil the demand vs. supply shortage for analytics skills like Hadoop, Spark, Machine Learning, Cassandra, NoSQL, etc. and land them a top gig in their career.

Kiren Kumar, executive director of Infocomms and Media, Singapore Economic Development Board said -“The establishment of Twitter’s analytics team is an exciting development as it provides Singaporeans with good job opportunities and allows them to partake in the creation of new products and services from Singapore.  We believe that such frontier digital jobs will provide Singaporeans with the growth opportunities they need to compete on a global stage.

With Twitter setting up its data science team in Singapore, I2R’s collaboration with Rolls Royce and VISA for pattern recognition and fraud detection on VISA cards and Microsoft hoping to inspire the next generation of big data and data science professionals from Singapore, through its collaboration with NUS (National University of Singapore) - there will be scores of hadoop and data science job opportunities for IT professionals. As Singapore’s data ecosystem is growing considerably, many well-established companies like Pivotal, MapR, SAS, TripAdvisor, Oracle, PayPal, Palantir, Microsoft, Nielsen, AirBnB, Facebook, Google, IBM are hiring big data professionals.

It’s not just the established companies that are looking to scale up their analytics teams but also startups like Property Guru, Honestbee, Grab, DataRobot, and Zalora have established data teams and are looking to hire more people in the big data domain.

Big Data and Hadoop Job Market in Europe

According to a report by Forfas and the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, 21.000 analytic jobs could be created by 2020. 17,470 of the analytic job positions would be for big data job roles and the remaining 3630 positions would be for deep analytical talent. The Dublin City of University is all set to establish the AIB chain in big data analytics for research and academic development.

Economy Minister Simon Hamilton said – “The field of data analytics is one which is growing globally and becoming increasingly important for companies today. Northern Ireland possesses the high quality graduates and post-graduates much sought after by market-leading indigenous companies and large-scale professional services Centres of Excellence. I would encourage any unemployed graduate to consider a career in this vibrant and growing technology sector.”
