Seeing Beneath our Differences and Honoring the Fundamental Human Dignity Inside Every Individual

Robinhood was founded on a simple idea: that our financial markets should be accessible to all. With customers at the heart of our decisions, Robinhood is lowering barriers and providing greater access to financial information and investing. Together, we are building products and services that help create a financial system everyone can participate in.

Robinhood’s mission is to democratize finance for all, and is championed by our Founders, leaders, and our employees everyday. Our mission allows us to lean into celebrations that symbolize equity and champion change leaders who have paved the way for equality, not just in finance but across humanity as a whole.

On Monday, January 16th, people around the world will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the legendary civil rights activist who led with courage and compassion. On MLK Day, I know many Robinhoodies will be reflecting on what equality means, which is championed by our Black Excellence ERG and embraced across Robinhood. I believe it captures something distinct and special about humans — our ability to see beneath our differences and honor the fundamental human dignity inside every individual, while ensuring everyone has an opportunity to thrive and grow. We are at our best when we honor the humanity in those around us, and when we focus on the things that bind us rather than those that separate us.

But I do not view this as an easy task. Especially in a world filled with fear and amplified danger, our ancient selves push us to attack, reject, and separate. Yet we have been blessed with an ability to transcend this, and grow. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Let no man pull you low enough to hate him.” Though it can be difficult, the world will heal only if we can resist the pull towards hatred and division and commit instead to loving without limits.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘’I have decided to stick with love…Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Living in the moments that exercise love and not hate is the change we want to see amplified in our world today and its future state. I am energized by the experience I’ve had at Robinhood, where I see a passion for operating with love and providing an opportunity for all Robinhoodies to demonstrate love in everything we do, and that is our way of ensuring we hold onto the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I’m proud to pursue this commitment with my kind, open-hearted Robinhoodies. Happy MLK Day.
