An AWS service called AWS Glue is a serverless cloud ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) service. Using this managed, economical solution, your data can be categorized, cleaned, enhanced, and moved from source systems to target systems.

AWS Glue is a fully managed ETL service that automates the process of cataloging, preparing, and cleaning so analysts can focus on analyzing it and not wrangling it. AWS Glue has a central metadata repository called the Glue catalog. This ETL engine produces the Scala or Python code for the ETL process and features for ETL jobs monitoring, scheduling, and metadata management. You do not need to control the Infrastructure because AWS already does it.

AWS Glue features a straightforward console for discovering, transforming, and querying the data, and it works exceptionally well with structured and mildly-structured data. The created ETL scripts can also be edited and executed in real-time using the console.

Creating an ETL pipeline using AWS Glue is a straightforward process that can be broken down into a few easy steps.

AWS Glue's Data Catalog is a central repository for metadata about data assets, including data sources, transformations, and target destinations. To create a Data Catalog, you need to specify the data stores you want to use and the data format for each store. You can do this manually or use AWS Glue's automatic schema discovery feature.

The next step is to create a crawler that automatically discovers the schema of your data sources and creates metadata in the Data Catalog. The crawler also helps detect any changes in schema and updates metadata as required.

To begin, you need to establish an AWS Glue Crawler to identify your data source. This can be done by accessing the AWS Glue console, choosing "Crawlers" from the left-hand menu, and clicking "Add Crawler". Give it a name and select the type of data source (such as S3, DynamoDB, or RDS) and provide the necessary access information.

After the Crawler is set up, it will automatically scan the data source and generate a table in the Glue Data Catalog, which will serve as the source for your ETL job.

A glue job is a script that defines the transformation logic for your data. You can use Scala or Python to write the job using AWS Glue’s in-built libraries or pre-built templates to perform ETL processes.

Build an ETL job by accessing the "Jobs" section of the AWS Glue console and clicking "Add Job". Give it a name, choose the source and target tables, and pick the data format.

4. Define the Data Transformations

Define the data transformations you want to perform on the data by creating a Python or Scala script and uploading it to the job. This script includes the logic for the data transformations and will be executed when the job runs.

5. Schedule the Job

Finally, schedule the job to run on a regular basis by accessing the "Triggers" section of the AWS Glue console and creating a new trigger. Set the schedule for the trigger and choose the job that you want it to run.

6. Monitor and Debug the Job

You can use AWS Glue’s monitoring and logging tools to monitor the progress of the job. If there are any errors or issues that arise during the ETL processes use the debugger to troubleshoot them.
